How many hospitality chairs fit on one m²?

When you start furnishing your ( hospitality) business, the question: ‘’How many chairs will fit on my floor space?‘’ plays a crucial role. Whether it’s an attractive terrace or a stylish interior, finding the right balance between comfort and capacity is essential. At Kaja, we are happy to help you arrange and optimise your space. In this blog, we give you handy guidelines for both indoor and outdoor spaces.

Guidelines for indoor

For a comfortable setting in a restauran certain distances are important. After all, you want guests or clients to be able to move around easily and sit comfortably.

  • Space between wall and a chair: at least 35 cm
  • Space between two chairs (or tables): at least 50 cm
  • Walk routes: minimum 90 cm, allowing staff and guests to move freely

With these guidelines, you create an environment where guests feel comfortable and staff can move smoothly. This means that, depending on your table and chair size, you end up with an average of about 1,5 to 2 m² per chair in a restaurant setting.

Guidelines for on the terrace

On terraces, the available space is often more limited than indoors. That means you have to work in a slightly more compact way, without compromising your guests’ experience.

  • Space between seats: you can often take less here than inside, e.g. 40 cm
  • Walk routes: minimum 80-90 cm, depending on available space

As a result, a terrace can have an average of 1 to 1,5 m² per chair, depending on how efficiently the space is laid out. Also consider flexible patio furniture, such as stackable chairs or folding tables. These can be moved quickly and conveniently when needed.

Tip: Combine comfort with style!

It is important to look not only at the number of chairs, but also at how comfortable and practical your furnishings are. Too little space can cause discomfort for guests and staff. At the same time, too spacious an arrangement can limit the capacity of your business. Our designers and sales staff are happy to advise! From finding the perfect balance to the functionality that an indoor or outdoor piece of furniture must fulfil.
