The atmosphere is lively yet relaxed, as if you’re joining a place you’ve always known. That sense of familiarity is no accident, it’s the result of deliberate choices in design and hospitality.
The roaring twenties are revived at The Old Bakery in Almelo
When you step into The Old Bakery in Almelo, you are immersed in a world of style and comfort. This is a place where time seems to stand still. In the monumental building from 1910, once the bakery of J.W. Gunther, the charm of the roaring twenties comes back to life. Here, history, interior design and hospitality merge into an experience that invites you to stay and enjoy delicious snacks and drinks.
A monumental building with a new story
The distinctive building forms the foundation of the interior. High ceilings, original details and subtle Art Nouveau elements tell the story of a rich history. Where bread was once baked, evenings full of flavour, atmosphere and encounters are now enjoyed.
Our interior designer Malou Oude Alink immediately saw the potential of this location. ‘The monumental building, with its high ceilings and Art Nouveau details, called for a layered and atmospheric design,’ she says. ‘We wanted to translate the warmth and elegance of the Roaring Twenties into a contemporary, homely wine and dining bar.’
The result is an interior that effortlessly connects the past and the present. Here, historical charm is not just a decorative element, but a bold part of the experience.
A colour palette full of character
An important part of that experience is the carefully composed colour palette. Wine red, emerald green and cognac predominate. Colours that immediately evoke the glamour and elegance of the 1920s, but which also feel warm and accessible.
These shades are enhanced by the use of rich materials: marble, velour, dark wood and mirrors. Together, they create depth, reflection and an almost cinematic atmosphere. During the day, the interior captures the natural light, while in the evening the space transforms into an intimate, soft environment where everything seems to shine.
The 1920s as inspiration. But always with an eye for comfort and contemporary hospitality.
Materials you want to feel
The interior of The Old Bakery has been designed with great care. Each material has been carefully selected to be not only beautiful, but also pleasant to the touch.
The bar forms an important focal point in the space. The composite marble top immediately creates a luxurious look, which is repeated in the round table tops. The other tables are made of solid oak, combined with copper-coloured bases. This combination creates a warm, robust base with a refined finish.
Nothing has been left to chance in the upholstery either. The fabrics are rich, soft and inviting. They invite you to take a seat and, above all, to stay seated.
‘In collaboration with the owners, we carefully coordinated every fabric, shape and material choice,’ says Malou. ‘So that the interior not only exudes style, but above all feels pleasant and familiar.’
Customized design for comfort and connection
What makes The Old Bakery special is the way bespoke design has been used to create different atmospheres. Custom-made banquettes in various heights and seating angles provide a dynamic layout. Whether you come for an intimate evening for two, drinks with friends, or a long wine night with colleagues, there is always a spot that suits you.
The luxuriously upholstered hospitality barstools invite spontaneous conversations at the bar. The elegant chairs at the tables offer comfort for long evenings. This variety creates a natural layering in the interior, without ever feeling busy.
The overall atmosphere feels lively, yet never crowded. Exactly as the owners envisioned: “Not a stiff setting, but vibrant, inviting, and full of character.”
Lighting, music, and a great atmosphere
Lighting plays a key role in the overall experience. All light sources are carefully attuned to the atmosphere of the restaurant. Warm tones, soft shadows, and subtle accents create that distinctive glow that brings the space to life in the evening. Music also contributes to the complete picture. Swinging, stylish, and full of energy, it seamlessly complements the roaring twenties theme. It is music that never overpowers, but supports, gently guiding you into a relaxed rhythm.
Together, light and sound make The Old Bakery more than just a place to eat and drink. It is a place to experience.
A place where you naturally linger longer
At The Old Bakery, everything is about enjoying together. Tables gradually fill with small dishes meant for sharing. Glasses are continuously refilled. With more than thirty wines by the glass and an extensive bottle selection, there is always something new to discover.
Timeless charm in Almelo
The Old Bakery proves that a strong interior is far more than just a pretty picture. It forms the foundation for memories, conversations, and evenings that last longer than expected. By bringing history, design, and hospitality together, a space with its own soul has been created here.
A place where atmosphere, flavour, and sound merge. Where you come for a glass of wine and stay for the experience. Where the past is palpable, without ever feeling nostalgic.
Or, as many guests put it themselves: at The Old Bakery, everything just works. And that’s exactly why you want to return.
